I knew it was foolish to linger in the Rook Cabin with dawn just brushing the sky, but I couldn’t leave, couldn’t abandon the warm nest Dylan and I had created in front of the fire.

And so, we talked, our voices lazy as I marveled at his presence, marveled that I could touch him and taste him and smell him, that I could look into his eyes and tell him everything that was in my heart.

Beginning with my brother.

“Where is he?” I asked after some time had passed, knowing his answer could change everything.

He leaned up on one elbow, touched my bare shoulder.

“He’s hurt.”

I tensed, felt him draw me against his chest.

“He got between you and Henry Younts,” I said. “I told him to stay away, told him we couldn’t be together in case something happened,"

“He loves you.”

I felt tears prickle behind my lids, praying that my brother would survive, knowing I had to end this if I ever wanted to see him again.

“He’ll be okay,” Dylan assured me, his arms tightening. “Troy and Amanda will take care of him.”

“Amanda,” I echoed, thinking of the baby growing inside Sara Bennett, knowing she must have realized her presence here could tear the fabric we were desperately trying to hold together.

“She said there wasn’t a place for her here, said your love would build a bridge so I could find you.”

“And those quarters you dropped by the river didn’t hurt, either.” I smiled. “Nice work, Locke.”

He chuckled. “Never thought my Three Musketeers addiction would come in handy.”

“Guess I should stop complaining about the wrappers you stuff in the couch cushions.”

He laughed, cupped my face again. “You can complain about anything you want.”

I frowned. “Can I have that in writing?”

He smiled again, pulled me into another kiss and I wrapped my arms around his neck, wishing this moment could last forever.

Then he was rolling onto his back, settling me into the crook of his arm as we stared at the ceiling.

After some time had passed, he spoke.

“Troy told me not to come back without you.”

I pressed my lips together, a strange tingle sweeping my body.

“He did?”

Dylan nodded- not jealous- just acknowledging something he thought I should know.

“And Deputy Locke always gets his girl?” I asked.

He laughed. “Every century or so.”

I smiled, content with the game we were playing even as the lightening sky told me it could end at any moment.

“Unless he’s been playing basketball and crawls into bed without a shower.”

He chuckled, shook his head. “That was one time.”

“Once was enough!”

He chuckled again. “What do you think Holly and Dave would say if they could see us now?”

I smiled, the thought of our friends making them seem closer. “Holly would have every man within fifty miles doing her dirty work so we could stay in bed forever.”

“Sounds good to me,” he bent to kiss my shoulder. “But eventually you’d have to introduce me to your extended family.”

I made a face.

“Come on,” he teased, one hand behind his head. “I can do the yard work and you sew or knit or something.
